Apple MacBook Pro Aluminum 2.4GHz, 2.53GHz

Apple has released recently the redesigned 15.4-inch MacBook Pro laptop with a LED backlight display, aluminum “unibody” enclosure, NVIDIA’s switchable graphics solution, and a glass multi-touch trackpad.

The new MacBook Pro is 0.95 inches thin and weighs 5.5 pounds, according to its specifications. Currently, there are two new MacBook Pro models - the first (MB470LL/A) has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor at 2.4GHz, 2GB of DDR3 memory, and a 250GB hard drive, while the second (MB471LL/A) comes with a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 320GB HDD. The both models ship with a slot-load DVD burner and can be configured with a 128GB solid state drive instead of the traditional HDD.

The 15.4″ display has a 1440 by 900 pixel resolution. It uses LED backlight and is covered with an edge-to-edge seamless glass. The switchable graphics solution consists of two Nvidia GeForce GPUs: a power-saving 9400M integrated chip and a high-performance 9600M GT dedicated video card. The MacBook Pro 2.4GHz model comes with a 256MB 9600M GT, while the 2.53GHz model ships with a 512MB version. Users can switch between the graphics chips without rebooting the system. However, switching video modes requires a change in System Preferences and a user logout.

Other features include an iSight camera, backlight keyboard, AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi 802.11n wireless module, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet LAN connector, Mini DisplayPort, two USB ports, an ExpressCard slot, and FireWire 800Mbps port.

MacBook’s innovative trackpad now offers “almost 40 percent” more tracking area and supports more Multi-Touch gestures. The trackpad area also acts as a trackpad button. In addition, users can enable multiple virtual buttons in software, such as right-clicking.

Here is how Apple describes the aluminum unibody enclosure of the latest MacBook Pros:

“To create the new MacBook Pro, the design and engineering teams devised a way to replace many parts with just one. That one part is called the unibody — a seamless enclosure carved from a single piece of aluminum.”

The laptop runs Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
